Read any good books lately?
How about passing them along?

Did you and your child enjoy reading any of the books listed below and now they’re sitting on your bookshelves? In an effort to make the books that kids want to read more readily available to more kids, your child’s teachers (and past and future teachers!) are looking for gently used copies of the titles listed below.

These books (and please, only these titles!) can be donated to LMS classrooms by leaving them in the “Donated Books” box in the Front Lobby of the school through the summer or in September.

LMS PTO Meeting Minutes

Meeting called to order at 7:04 p.m.

Win-Win Grant Thank-Yous

Thank-yous were received from the Reading department, the Literacy team, the Cyclone team, the Boys Reading Group, and the 7th grade Social Studies team.

Recycling Club

The club thanked the PTO for its support, and then presented on current projects and future goals. The club is making bows and beads from magazine pages as well as bottle dryers. Recycling of cell phones, ink cartridges, computer equipment and batteries is ongoing. New recycling bins have been purchased for the school, and the creation of recycling stations for milk cartons is under way. Monies earned by the club are used to buy supplies. In addition, the club would like to buy a closet for staff use and stock it with items such as film canisters and egg cartons. Their grant was for bulletin boards to be used to post school notices, reducing the number of photocopies and establishing information points. The club will go through proper channels to communicate the new process for posting notices.

Treasurer's Report

● Sportswear

- The balance of the sportswear has been paid out. There was a profit of $1,000.

- There was discussion about offering new items such as lunch boxes, PVC-free water bottles, and lanyards. Surveying the student population may be a good way to determine what items would sell.

- The possibility of coordinating the ordering of PTO sportswear/gear with the various school sports teams was raised. This may help everyone receive better pricing.

- The Literacy Team is holding a flip-flop sale in February. The results may give insight into how other items and/or pre-selling would be received.

Principal's Report

● This is transition season for 5th and 8th graders. Mr. Dolphin will be meeting with the 8th graders Jan. 26-27 regarding their schedules.

● The LMS master schedule is done.

● The budget is in deliberation.

● The Thunderstorms have been doing African drumming.

● On Feb. 5, a group of band students will perform at the elementary schools.

● Grades for the second quarter close this week.

● Grades have been reviewed and decisions made regarding students not eligible for the Washington, D.C., trip.

● The next round in the Middle Schools of Excellence process is Jan. 25. On Feb. 16 the team will present at Plymouth State.

● Student Council will hold its annual chocolate rose sale for Valentine's Day; 3,000 roses usually are sold.

● The 2010-2011 school calendar is ready to be voted on. Londonderry's February vacation will coincide with Massachusetts'. The Londonderry, Manchester, and Hudson school calendars are all the same because of vocational education.

Book Fair/Ice Cream Social

● The book fair is Feb. 1-5, with the ice cream social being on the 3rd.

● Volunteers signed up on-line through Google docs. This worked extremely well. Next year's officers will need to be educated on this tool.

● Teachers will be reminded that wish lists are for classroom libraries.

Volunteerism at LMS

● The amount of volunteering taking place is tremendous but not always recognized. For example, the nurse's office recently performed hearing tests and scoliosis checks on all children.

● Mary Wing Soares will post the contacts for photocopying and volunteer help on the PTO web site.

Movie Night

● Movie night will be held on March 5 for all middle schoolers. Goonies was discussed as an alternative to Up, as it may attract more students. Andy Corey will preview the movie.

● Alicia Ronayne, representing the 8th grade science teachers, discussed the possibility of selling popcorn to raise money to help defray the cost of the floating lab. Other fund-raisers: they made $2,300 by selling entertainment books, and will hold a student-faculty basketball game Feb. 18.

● Selling popcorn at lunch was also discussed. These small bags would stay in the cafeteria. It may be easier to rotate through the 8th grades rather than try to sell to everyone.

● The 8th grade team would send out a request for parent volunteers to pop and sell. An option is to buy in bulk from Cinema 12.

● The whereabouts of the PTO popcorn is unknown.

Londonderry Middle School PTO

Wednesday, October 21, 2009

Members present: Mary W. Soares, Deb Conti, Andy Corey, Doreen Stubbs, Brenda Pucciarelli, Ann Collacchi, Sue Joncas, Shannon Berube and Susan Gualtieri.

Meeting called to order at 4:03PM by Mary Wing Soares

Thank you messages – Mary read messages from Sue Buckman thanking the PTO for their help with the More than Words brochures and from the Wellness committee thanking the PTO for their previous donation to the Wellness auction.

Secretary’s Report – The minutes were read by the members present. Annie Collacchi made the motion to accept the minutes. Doreen Stubbs seconded the motion. Motion passed unanimously.

Treasurer’s Report – Deb Conti went through the treasurer’s report. Questions were answered about the merchandise totals. Only the student purchases have been tabulated. Staff purchases will be compiled and completed by October 30th. Mr. Corey made the motion to accept the treasures report. Su Joncas seconded the motion. Motion passed unanimously.

Principal’s Report – Andy Corey – Mr. Corey thanked Mrs. Collacchi for taking over last meeting. NECAP testing is complete; tests are being boxed up and sent back. Students and staff did a terrific job and like the new format of having three consecutive Thursdays. Mr. Corey interviewed the students and they expressed their frustration about the amount of time they have to wait once they have finished the tests. Tests typically take about 45 minutes to finish but students are given up to 90 minutes. Parent conferences are coming up. Parents sign up on line.

More than Words is coming up in early November. Topics that are difficult to discuss are part of the program. There will be a school wide component so that every student will have at least one section of the program even if they do not come in the afternoon/evening. Report cards are November 10th. It is also mix it up day, a day when students are requested through a color coding system to sit with new students. No school on the 11th. LMS loves to read is November 13th. Everyone must read. PTO meeting is November 18th at 7PM. Parent conferences are the 19th and 20th.

Students are doing a wonderful job with their behavior. We are working on a “stay to the right” program, trying to get students to move from place to place on the right side of the hallway.

Busses can also be a point of problem. Mr. Corey asked that if parents hear of any problems they should bring it to the attention of the administration.

Win-Win Grants – Mary Wing Soares – The grant forms will be sent out this week. The PTO will require that all applicants be a member. The grant form and the PTO membership form will be sent out at the same time.

Wellness Auction Basket – does the PTO have anything to donate this year?

Sportswear sales update – Sue Joncas said the staff orders are down, staff still have another week to put their orders in and there could be another sale later in the year.

New Business: 6th grade Social – November, 2009
It was decided that the PTO would continue to hold the social in November. The ideas Mrs. Stepanik sent to Mrs. Soares were read into the record. The PTO members believe the ideas have merit but would be better received by students at a different venue, for example during ‘Resiliency for Life’ activities. The social will include game time in the cafeteria, ice cream sundaes that will be included in the price of the ticket for the social. There will be volleyball in the multipurpose room and four square, jump rope and other activities in the gymnasium. Students may move from area to area. The time will be from 2:45 to 4:30. Last year the event went until 5pm but it seemed just a bit too long for the students.

Vendor’s night: Mrs. Soares received an e-mail from a teacher which outlined a fundraising idea for the Artist in Residence program. She had been approached by a Lia Sophia representative who is willing to donate a portion of the profits from a party to the program should a party be held at school. The idea snowballed into sponsoring a vendor’s afternoon and evening on November 18th at the next PTO meeting. Mrs. Soares sent an e-mail to all the teachers in the school outlining the opportunity. Anyone who is interested in participating must donate an item for a raffle, a portion of their profits to the Artist in Residence program and something to the Wellness Auction that can be auctioned or raffled off. Other possible vendors are: Tastefully simple, Pampered chef, Longaberger, Lia Sofia, Arbonne, etc.
Also bring punch and food items. People interested in participating should send their information to Mary W. Soares at mjws2000@comcast.net.

NH Middle School of the Year - Susan Guiltier is looking for parent volunteers to be involved in Edies process. LMS is being considered as the NH middle school of the year. If the middle school passes the first round (application) parents would need to be available for when the committee comes to visit the school to express their experiences.
